Observation

I was given the opportunities to observe three different classroom teachers where I learned different teaching methods from the three different teachers.

Timber Creek Elementary

TCE

For the past two week I have had the opportunity to observe a teacher at Timber Creek Elementary for 2 weeks. I observed Mrs. Petty 2nd grade class  on the 18,19,21,25,26,and the 28th. While I was there she taught science, English, and did rotations. During my observation I learned how a teacher would act like towards 6- and 7-year old’s.
When I first walked into the classroom, I noticed all the fun chairs and different sitting areas the kids had the opportunity to pick from. I liked the walls, which were filled with the kids drawings and other stuff that involved the kids. When I first walked in I felt a little nervous which is why I thought the teacher was a little cold, but as I got into a routine in her class, I have noticed that I was wrong about Mrs. Petty. The Emotional aspect of the classroom was a little cold the very first time but that not how it is perceived. Through my observation of the rom and the class I was overwhelmed with the amount of thing on the walls and the amount of freedom the kids are allowed. The students were very welcoming and very polite towards each other and towards me. Throughout the 2 weeks I have noticed that it takes some kids a little longer to warm up with strangers and others it takes less than a millisecond.
During my observations in the class the teacher had many types of lesson plans to help the students retract what they are learning. There was a plant lesson plan that went on for a week where the teacher put seeds into CD cases and put a moist paper towel in it. This was to teach kids how to observes, make hypothesis, and a conclusion on what will happen to the seedlings. Another lesson was learning the sound of constants and vowels but putting it to dance moves and a sound track that the teacher plays once a day, to help the students remember word sounds and how to spell them. These were just but a few lessons because one day the students had a makerspace day where they learned out to use their imaginations and problem-solving skills by helping the plant get out of sticky random situations. To me it seems like the students like all the lessons they are given because the teacher makes it fun and imaginative for the kids.
Through these lesson plans Mrs. Petty gives her students, she includes technology in everything she does. Like when the kids do rotations, one of the rotations includes laptops/iPads because the lesson plan for that rotation is on an app. Technology was used to play the dancing song used to help the memorization of the kids. The teacher kept a good classroom structure where she didn’t take any silliness from the kids. through teaching her students, the teacher treats her student as if they are older than they actually are because when I first walked into her classroom I thought that Mrs. Petty taught a 3rd or 4th grade class. After a while I asked what grade the students are in and I was shocked to learn that they were only second graders because of how professional the teacher treats her students. In the class there are trouble makers that don’t want to do their work but Mrs. Petty treats it properly by pulling them aside and telling the kids that they have to move away from each other and other stuff involving punishments like taking 5 minutes away from recess. Throughout my two-week observation I have learned how a teacher can treat problematic students and how she can keep them in line. I have also learned how I can relate many lessons with technology.
When I first went in I was expecting all out craziness from the students, like the examples in the movies where the student throw things around and everyone yelling at the top of their lungs but the students in Mrs. Petty class where well behaved and better than what I was expecting. Majority of the student were very extraverted and very welcoming toward new comers in the class like me. All of the students were very friendly and enjoyed participating in class. The interaction between kids where mostly friendly but there where sometimes where kids would blame each other or they would cut the line. Throughout my two week observation, the students might have changed my mind about teaching elementary schooling because I was very focused on only middle and high school students but I believe I might actually really enjoy teaching young minds.
I have very few further notes but I love how the teacher gets her kids ready for lunch is by playing the lunch gonoodle video every time. I believe the teacher does this to relax and calm her student for lunch after a long lesson plan day. I enjoyed my time and getting to have the experience of observing second graders. Another note I have is that I love the teacher random seating chair because I believe the student really enjoy exploring he different kind of chairs they sit in every day. I know there is no assign seats, which means the students get to have different sitting chairs every day.
A memorable moment/ a moment I have enjoyed was the plant lesson the teacher did and seeing the reaction the student had to their plant and how much it have grown. The kids were really surprised on how much their plant has grown because there were baby roots already grown on the seed. Another moment I enjoy observing was when the students pretended that they were sycamore trees and they dropped their own sycamore seed they made out of paper. Then the student had to problem solve problems that their sycamore seeds got into. I have truly enjoyed my observation time in Mrs. Petty’s class.
